The BECA Foundation - A Nonprofit Latino Scholarship Organization

MENTOR PROGRAM

Both getting into and completing college is a three-fold challenge; course work preparation, financial aid and adult mentoring help to stay the course.  BECA steps “into this mix” to help promising Latino students succeed by addressing these concerns.  College is the time when a mentor may be needed most, especially for low-income students who are the first in their families to attend college. A sampling of just how a Mentor is of great assistance to a student: helps through the rough spots and cheers successes; assists in communication skills with professors and administrators and fellow students; provides encouragement to stay the course to look at an education as an investment rather than an expense; opens their  eyes to career options and paths; encourages a student to stay on a steady, timely and certain trajectory to a four-year degree; assists in exploring the financial aid options available to continue their education; boosts morale particularly when they seem to be slipping into academic trouble, etc.

A Mentor is made available to the Student that requests a Mentor.  It is preferred to match a student to a mentor who is accomplished and knowledgeable in a field similar to what the Student is pursuing, but not necessary.   A Mentor develops a relationship with the student.  Personal introduction oftentimes forms a bond. Communication with the student may be by mail, telephone or email, the latter being more convenient for those who have computer availability.

BECA’s success stories are often attributed to the commitment of a Mentor. The bond created with the student has oftentimes proven to be long lasting.
